Spooky plant-based meatballs decorated with red pepper legs, tomato sauce and simple edible eyes on a black plate
Spooky Plant-Based Meatballs

Halloween food doesn't have to mean complicated baking or unusual ingredients. These vegan meatballs turn Amazonika Mundi's frozen Italian Veggie Meatballs into fun little spider bites using ingredients you can easily find in an Indian supermarket.

The meatballs are already seasoned with Mediterranean herbs, cashew fibre, plant-based protein ingredients, Assîsî indigenous pepper and açaí extract, so there's no need to make the meatball mixture from scratch.

Serve them with warm tomato sauce, thin red capsicum strips, edible eyes and fresh coriander for a Halloween appetizer that looks playful but still feels like something you could make at home.

Ingredients

For the meatballs

  • 8 Amazonika Mundi Italian Veggie Meatballs, frozen

  • 1 tsp cooking oil

  • ½ cup tomato pasta sauce or thick tomato sauce

For the spooky spider look

  • ½ red capsicum, cut into thin strips

  • 2–3 tbsp vegan mayonnaise or vegan cheese, for the eyes

  • 2–3 black olives, sliced into small pieces for pupils

  • Fresh coriander, roughly chopped

For a fully vegan recipe: check the labels of the bun/sauce/vegan mayo or cheese you use and choose products without dairy or egg.

How to Make Spooky Vegan Meatballs

1. Cook the frozen meatballs

Keep the meatballs frozen until you're ready to cook them. There’s no need to thaw them first- you can cook them straight from frozen.

Air fryer: Cook at 190°C for 10–12 minutes, until crisp outside and hot inside.

Skillet: Cook over medium heat with a little oil for 6–8 minutes, turning occasionally.

Oven: Bake at 200°C for 14–16 minutes, turning halfway.

Deep fry: If you prefer a crispier finish, you can also deep fry the frozen meatballs in hot oil until golden and heated through. The cooking method is completely up to you and your preferred texture.

Frozen food should be stored at -18°C or below and that storage instructions on food packaging should be followed. Keep frozen meatballs properly frozen until preparation and follow the storage directions on the product pack. (FSSAI)

2. Warm the tomato sauce

Heat the tomato sauce in a small pan for a few minutes until warm and slightly thick.

Keep it fairly thick- the sauce should coat the meatballs rather than completely cover them.

3. Make the spider legs

Cut the red capsicum into thin, uneven strips.

You don't need perfectly identical pieces. Slightly different lengths actually make the spiders look more homemade.

4. Make the eyes

Cut small circles from vegan cheese or use small dots of thick vegan mayonnaise.

Place a tiny piece of sliced black olive in the centre of each one to create the pupils.

5. Assemble the spiders

  • Place the warm meatballs on a black serving plate.

  • Spoon a little tomato sauce over or underneath each meatball.

  • Arrange 6-8 capsicum strips around each one as spider legs.

  • Add two edible eyes to each meatball and finish with a little freshly chopped coriander.

  • Don't worry about making every spider identical. The slightly uneven shapes are part of the homemade Halloween look.

6. Serve immediately

Serve while the meatballs are warm and the sauce is fresh.

For a party, arrange them together on one large black platter or serve 2-3 per person with extra tomato sauce on the side.

Easy Substitutions

  • Red capsicum: Use roasted red pepper strips if you prefer them softer.

  • Vegan cheese: Thick vegan mayo can work for the eyes.

  • Black olives: Use finely chopped black olives rather than whole slices for smaller pupils.

  • Tomato sauce: Homemade tomato sauce, marinara or a thick pasta sauce will work.

  • Coriander: Use parsley if you prefer its flavour.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the spooky meatballs:

  • As a Halloween party appetizer

  • With extra tomato dipping sauce

  • Alongside baked potato wedges or fries

  • On a mixed plant-based snack platter

  • With mini toasted bread slices

  • As part of a Halloween finger-food table

The easiest presentation is black plate + warm meatballs + red sauce + capsicum legs + simple eyes. You don't need elaborate Halloween decorations around the food.
